東京では12年ぶりになるという、エッシャーの展覧会。

世界最大級というエッシャー・コレクションを誇る、イスラエル博物館の約150点の作品が紹介された。

この展覧会は、”エッシャーがエッシャーになるまで・・・8つのキーワードを通じて解く、奇想版画家の謎”と題して、会場は8つのコーナーから構成されていた。

エッシャーといえば、不思議なだまし絵で有名だが、はじめからそうした作品を制作していたわけではない。

聖書の天地創造をテーマにした版画や、イタリアの各地を独自のアングルで捉えた版画などが展示されていたが、後年のだまし絵のセンスは、そうした初期の作品の中にも見て取れる。

後半は、いわゆるエッシャーらしい、だまし絵のオンパレード。
